IMHO the best thing that ever happened to my BN1 is when second gear broke
after Open Roads 2002. Luckily I was in Lompoc, CA and drove down to Smitty's
in Thousand Oaks and with lots of help from Smitty, Jim Albeck and others
installed a five-speed and drove back to Maryland.
In the case of four-cylinder cars an extra added advantage to doing the
conversion is that you wind up with a nice hydraulic clutch (I later upgraded
to a
BJ8 diaphgram model for extra smoothness), a great improvement over the balky,
flimsy manual as original.
