Hi Ken,
Transmission noises are usually fairly easy to diagnose. Typically
countershaft bearings will not make much noise in direct 4th gear because
the countershaft is not transmitting any power.
If the transmission makes a hissing noise when you let the clutch pedal out
the problem is almost always the countershaft bearings
If the countershaft bearings are failing you will almost always find steel
slivers on the overdrive magnet.
If the countershaft bearings are going it is advisable to get in there
quickly before the inside bearing surface of the counter gear (laygear)
becomes damaged.

I have changed the diff and rebuilt the driveshaft and my noise continues so
I guess it must be the transmission. The last two drives with the car, I
have felt a new slight resistance going from 2nd to 3rd. Like there are now
two slots for the 3/4 side of the pattern. I guess I will take the top off
the trans and see what I can see about the shifting, but I wouldn't think it
necessarily is related to the low speed growl.
Any more ideas appreciated.
