Carlos -

The Gear driven pumps were put in later 3000s by BMC because they are
cheaper to make.

The rotary vane pumps are better and tend to pump more oil more
consistently over the entire RPM range, although at very high RPMs the
gear pump is apparently better.

The rotary vane pump will last longer because the primary pump/mating
surfaces are both hardened steel, so metal bits in your oil won't
scratch the surfaces and decrease its ability to pump oil over time.

The gear pumps, on the other hand, use the soft aluminum body around
the gears as part of the primary pumping action for the pump... this
means if metal flakes get in your oil (which it will)... it will
easily scratch & score the pump body and decrease its ability to pump
oil over time... the gear pumps wear out over time.

I have 70,000 miles on my rotary vane pump and it still pumps as good
as the day I put it in the engine.

Regards,

Alan
