rusting fuel sender float

Greetings again,
If my sender float has rusted through the tin plating
in a few areas is there anything I can do to stop it
short of removing, cleaning it up and having it
replaited?  Are floats avail separately?  I see new
sending units have plastic floats held with a
different arm style.
