Bill, This used to happen to me on my old generator Alfa and VW every time the generator brushes wore down to the point they no longer made good contact. You could usually replace the brushes without servicing the generator rotor, but eventually that would wear to the point where replacing the brushes wouldn't help and the rotor would have to be rebuilt.
