This has been an interesting discussion. I have both gauges on my Healey.
The volt meter tells me that my generator is functioning when it reads
close to 15 volts but the gauge I check most often when watching for
problems is the ammeter. After sitting for a period of time or causing the
battery to lose voltage for whatever reason - such as starting the car,
when the ammeter goes from plus to zero, I feel assured that the generator
and regulator are working properly and that the battery has reached its
full charge. The 'experts' may be technically correct but my reality says
I'll take three device checks over one. But then, I'm 'gauge happy'
anyway. In addition, I have a fuel pressure gauge and vacuum gauge.
