There has been a relatively high instance of failure on Vx
models. At least a couple of users had their Palms replaced
to see if they could cure the problem that way. Just the
other day John Coffey sent us info on what might be the real
reason why.
We've strugged with the Vx, and a few months ago we had some
problems with some IIIxe's as well. As it turns out,
several of these models have a factory DRAM component which
is faulty.
To learn more, point your browser to
http://www.palm.com/support/dram/
You'll arrive at a page that tells about which machines are
affected, and will tell you if your machine is one of them,
as determined by the serial number. Because the models
listed as effected are exactly the models that we've had
repeated problems with, I would encourage all Palm owners of
IIIxe, Vx, and IIIc models to check out this page.
To more directly answer Gordon's question, I would probably
still order the IIIe, even if it is listed as a three week
wait. Recently I ordered another IIIe from Cyberian Outpost
http://www.outpost.com and I had it in about a week even
though they said it was backordered for 2 weeks. The IIIe
remains the most robust Palm for our use, and a real bargain
at $149. Outpost even includes US shipping for free.
