All these names sure bring back memories.
Ken Gillanders was a Piece of Work (meant as a complimentary description!)=
=C2=A0 Ken's original Claim to Fame was drag racing his TR2 against Corvett=
es (handicapped) in the early 1950s.=C2=A0 And it was a Champion too.=C2=A0=
No one was more enthusiastic about TRIUMPH than Ken.=C2=A0 If I remember c=
orrectly, he was a local politician (Orange County, CA?), and like all poli=
ticians, he was verbose (chatty).=C2=A0 He could and would...talk your arm =
off.=C2=A0 Later on he started British Frame and Engine, a mail order sourc=
e of TRIUMPH competition parts.=C2=A0 Another, lesser known, fact about Ken=
, was his love of MAGIC.=C2=A0 I believe there is some sort of MAGIC HALL o=
f FAME in his home town, and Ken was a frequent visitor, and loved to show =
it off to visitors. =C2=A0
Sadly, both he and his wife had serious health problems at the end, impacti=
ng dealing with British Frame and Engine.
Ken was a Piece of Work.=C2=A0 I miss him.

And then he retired from racing and wasnt heard from for several years unti=
l after his wife passed away.=C2=A0 Out of the blue he calls me years later=
and says "Well, my wife is dead so I guess it's about time I get back to r=
acing"=C2=A0 He was interested=C2=A0 in finding another TR4 and I located o=
ne in the Midwest to send him to see.=C2=A0 Irv Corey's car as I recall.=C2=
=A0 Before he got there I mailed Irv a bat-a-gator to put in the car.=C2=A0=
In the end he bought a different Brit car but at least we got him back!=C2=
=A0=C2=A0
And, the bat-a-gators are another chapter that involved an argument about w=
hether his Bat or my Gator was male vs female.=C2=A0 But seriously, think a=
bout it, have you ever seen a gator that looked female?=C2=A0 Me neither an=
d I've seen a bundle of 'em down here.=C2=A0 Including the one that used to=
live in my pond, we named him Burt, after BS Levy.

usly and only does it for fun".=C2=A0 Sandy bit her lip and said nothing.=
=C2=A0 After the race she got Charlie off to the side and told him that he =
would "owe her forever" for not explaining to Betty just how seriously we d=
id, in fact, take it.=C2=A0=C2=A0
Ok, one more... in the paddock he blipped the throttle and it ran up more l=
ike an F1 car of the era.=C2=A0 "Charlie you POS, it's supposed to have a f=
lywheel on it!"=C2=A0 His reply "It does".... "Well it's supposed to have a=
weight at least in two digits"...."It does!=C2=A0 Eight point five"
Dear God, there are so many more Charlie Kates stories both that weekend an=
d thru the years.

ey. It is a joy to see it every time its at the track with us.</div>

I dont want to bore everyone with a hundred stories of that '92 weekend.&nb=
sp; But, here's my favorite..
<div>Charlie and I remain great friends even tho he races some Jap thingy n=
ow. We had been running literally door handle to door handle all week=
end long and having a great time at it. His wife Betty passed away so=
me years ago but she and my wife Sandy were
on the hillside at the keyhole for the "big" race that weekend. Duri=
ng the race as we continued to come thru the corner either nose to tail or =
side by side Betty says to Sandy "I sure am glad Charlie doesnt take this t=
oo seriously and only does it for fun".
Sandy bit her lip and said nothing. After the race she got Charlie o=
ff to the side and told him that he would "owe her forever" for not explain=
ing to Betty just how seriously we did, in fact, take it. </div>

<div>Ok, one more... in the paddock he blipped the throttle and it ran up m=
ore like an F1 car of the era. "Charlie you POS, it's supposed to hav=
e a flywheel on it!" His reply "It does".... "Well it's supposed to h=
