The tongue weight should be between 10-15% of the loaded weight of the trailer.
I did an internet search to find the optimum set-up.
Shoot for 12%.

I'm not sure what the other guys say but I think there may be a bit too much
tongue weight. Guys?
I load my car rear end first to get the weight right; put the engine about over
the axles. About 600 lb on the tongue.
My trailer is 81/2 x 24, 7000 gross and pulled by a Ram 1500, with airbags.
My $.02 worth.
Good luck and have fun.
Bill
PS: my trailer is a V-nose, which may tow easier. At 70 mph with no problems.
(Yet!) Yeah, I got a Hemi. ---- Original Message -----

Need some feedback from all you trailer guys. My history has been pulling my
Spitfire on an aluminum open trailer with a F-150 and upgraded to a new F250
SWR last year. I could barely ever notice that I was pulling a trailer. Fast
forward to a few months ago. I purchased a 2004 CargoMate enclosed trailer/toy
hauler. 28 foot box 10 foot tall. 12,500 GVW, torsion axles. I spent the last
few months going over mechanicals. New load rage F trailer tires. New Curt bar
style distribution hitch. Truck has a 12,400 trailer capacity and 1,250 max
tongue weight. The trailer as it sits right now with the car in it is 9,300
pounds and tongue weight is 1025 pounds. The engine of the car is pretty much
centered over the axles. I have been test driving it yesterday and today to get
a feel for it as I had planed to make the 450 mile trek to Blackhawk farms this
coming Thursday. Winds here have been 21 mph, gusting to 28. I can feel the
trailer pulling me side to side quite a bit. Traveling at speed is a bit
unnerving. I have gone over everything time and time again and everything looks
proper and too the book. I don't know if this is normal and I just have a
learning curve to go through going from a light open trailer to this tank or is
there something I am missing. What you say?
Thanks,
Marty
