After further consideration--as well as impatience and laziness--I decided
to skip the spacers. As you say, fitting the CAB is difficult enough
without pushing everything further out under the shroud.
Just took car for a shakedown and all seems good. In the process of
removing, rebuilding and refitting the carbs I also managed to lose an
annoying rattle that would only appear under acceleration between 3000 and
3500 rpms. It has been there for about five years and no matter what I did
I could not find its source. Good riddance!
