Subject: [Fot] Plastigage
I'm refreshing the bottom end of my GT6 - was too lazy to deal with the pistons
and cam timing in order to do proper crank measurements, so I thought I would
just slide in new bearings after a season. The crank looks good - it was
nitrided and shows very little wear, but the bearings, checked with plastigage,
were about 1/1000 looser than the original install at just under 2/1000s, so I
thought I could recapture some of that difference with fresh bearings.
That's worked out, but here's the punchline - I've been using green plastigage
-
.001-.003 range. Just for yucks I put a piece of red (.002-.006 range) in one
of the mains across the oil channel from the green - where the green was
measuring .0018 +/-, the red measured .0025! Tried a few more with the same
results. I'm inclined to believe the green as the measurements are in the
middle of it's measurement range (and it's the result I want!) - but am really
surprised at the difference.
Anybody have any plastigage expertise or stories they can add to this?
BTW, I went out shopping for jewelry for my wife for her birthday yesterday,
and
was grumbling to myself about the price, then remembered that new 2010 helmet
and hans device I'm about to order, and the trans rebuild I just paid for, and
the engine work, and the first race weekend, and suddenly I was really happy
Sara supports my racing, and the earrings looked pretty reasonable!
