I wish the recent PBS series "The WAR" by Ken Burns would be mandatory
viewing for all high school kids. The series (and I only caught 2 of the 7
parts) is truly told on a very personal level...one that really brings to
the forefront the sacrifices made by so many.
There is a book version also and I read it cover-to-cover and am still in
awe as to the sacrifices made by so many on our behalf.
I served (US Navy) from 66-70 and even though my ship (DD-781, a destroyer)
was in the Vietnam war zone (late 68 through spring 69) providing gunfire
support and doing other war time duties we thankfully were never shot at by
anyone. I can't imagine the actual feelings one must go through when on
the receiving end of enemy gunfire.
Anyone who has served, regardless of it being peacetime or wartime deserves
my respect because no one ever knows when peacetime can suddenly be wartime
on a moments notice putting everyone in the service potentially in harms
way.
