A couple of people mentioned the number of speeds in a TR box
referencing that 4 speed + OD = 6 or 7 speeds. Unfortunately, SCCA never
recognized the OD as "speeds" until sometime in the 90's. They had
wording in the GCR stating that 4 speeds plus OD still equals 4 speeds
in the gearbox. This kind of convoluted logic has mostly gone away. We
are now allowed 5 speeds.
With the torquey big TR motors, using 5 gears would most probably
result in lower lap times. Most Production and GT racers are using 1st
gear in a 5 speed as a paddock gear. Around PIR, Firebird, and
Buttonwillow, using 3 gears is faster than 4 with a lot of close ratio
boxes and production engines. Most of us clubbies shift too often and at
too high an rpm but it sure sounds good. Sometimes on board data
aquisition ruins a good thing.
