There is another factor here, and I'm not sure of it's effect. The intake valves on #3 and #4 (and #1 and #2) have a lot of shared opening, e.g 120 degrees of shared opening with a 300 degree duration cam. If you shut off the crossover, then much of the time you'd have two cylinders pulling on one carb. I've always wondered about the other extreme, i.e. mount both carbs on a big plenum.
