I do it whenever I forget to shut off my accusump. If it's been a
very long time or it's a fresh rebuild I pull the dizzy and spin the
pump to fill and pressurize the accusump and get oil everywhere in
the engine. Then I crank it with the ignition off until the engine is
spinning nicely and flip on the ignition. I don't do it because my
advance is locked--I use a little, about ten degrees. But I use
pretty soft springs.

Smokey built a lot of cars that ran in a narrow band of RPMs. I bet
there's some torque to be gained with a properly set up advance, but
I don't have a dyno or easy access to one, so I don't have a clue
what that might be. Seat of the pants won't work. It's probably way
less than ten percent.
