If you are going to try to use dwell to set the individual points
then yes, you have to block the other set open. The engine won't run
for shit when you block open the opening points. The entire reason
for having dual points is that the dwell (the number of degrees that
the electricity is flowing into the coil) is much longer--this gives
the coil longer to saturate and ensures you get a good spark even at
higher RPM. You don't really want to set the points that way though.
The combined dwell (the period from when the closing point closes
until the opening point opens) should be from 70 to 75 degrees, and
that's not a bad quick check to ensure your points are in the ballpark.
Set your points at .020" and make sure your timing is fine, then
check combined dwell.
One thing to pay attention to with newer Mallory points is the wear
of the rubbing block. They seem to have gone to a much stiffer
spring--I don't know why. If you don't keep the cam lubed and/or
don't check every now and then you'll find the point gap closes up.
Dwell is a nice quick check for problems.
Remeber that the closing points don't do anything to timing--just the
opening points. The way these things work is that the points are
connected in series, the "closing" points open first, but nothing
happens because the opening points are still closed. then the cam
reaches the opening points and electricity is cut off to the coil.
The magnetic field collapses and you get a spark. A tiny bit of
rotation later the closing point closes and electicity flows to the
coil again, much sooner than the opening point could restore power
without a very sharp cam ramp and hard springs. then the opening
point closes and nothing happens.
