I took Peyote's motor apart yesterday. I was shocked at how good everything
is. It was running nicely at the end of the year, but I really didn't expect
to find everything so nearly perfect. I'm going to put new bearings in, but
I'm keeping the old ones--they'd be better than settling for aluminum crap.
They have a little bit of embedded junk, but I mic'ed everything and every
part looks really good. I was expecting the rods to need reconditioning, but
they are as round as new. The crank looks perfect. Probably could have gone
another year, but I needed to find my oil leak anyway.
I suspect the leak was the periphery of the rear seal. From the polished
marks on the crank I think I had the seal spring tight enough. I removed two
winds from the spring anyway and decided to reuse the seal since the lip was
perfect and still soft. The fit of the seal into the retainer was a bit
loose and the both sides showed signs of rubbing on the retainer. I suspect
it was fluttering and allowing oil to escape. So I ran a thin bead of
silicon in the retainer.
The cam and followers look as good as the last time I looked at them. Zero
wear. Absolutely zero. I looked at the follower faces under my microscope
and they are featureless--flat and smooth. The cam shows a little polishing
but that's all. These things are worth the money. I'd put them into a street
car for sure.
I'm going to run a bottle hone through the bores and stick this thing back
together. I've got a dozen little things to do before I leave for Hawaii,
but it looks like I'll have plenty of time. All the machine shop waiting I
expected to do won't be happening.
Merry Christmas to all you folks, see you at the track.
