As far I know about that is that nitriding is hardening the surface to give a better durability to the bearings that might run on that surface. The cryo treatment does destress the material. In case of a crankflexing it will improve the crack protection for a certain amout. So do nitriding the surface to protect the bearings and after that cryo treatment to improve the overall resistance against breaking of it.
