Who is using 1.125" S.U's? The Spitfire uses 1.250". We made a consistent 127
BHP at the flywheel with a 1300 Spitfire engine with the twin 1.25" S.U.'s and
stock crank, rods and rockers 35 years ago. They were tuned to the "nth" every
day with simply mixture adjustment nut on the bottom. Try that with a Weber.
I love Webers. but they need full time attention to give the performance they
are credited for routinely. My GT-6 engine made 185-188 BHP at the flywheel
with two 1.5" Strombergs, but with the three 45 mm Webers with 40mm chokes it
made 210. So they can be giving a lot but you'll need to work at it to get
it. I did not invest several thousands of dollars in all sorts of Weber
tuning equipment just to have the fun of dragging it around.

Don't misunderstand in all this. I love Webers and admire their complicated
engineering & tuneability. You can do wonders with them, but to sit on the
pitwall and not make any changes race after race is losing out on the idea of
having these precise instruments. Yeah' that's it. Webers are an instrument
and S.U. is an AXE. when you start to drill different holes in your emulsion
tubes to increse or change the fuel flow at various RPM then you are indeed
getting the profit from the Webers. I've done it.
I guess in the end, I am saying that in the end you do not need Webers to be
competitive. They'll put you in front if you tinker with them, but if you
can't have the time or inclination to do the tinkering then I think the S.U.
is a much more suitable carburetor. This is my last on this. (Goodie,
everyone?)
