 About 1/2 year ago  a couple of us on the FOT list had some lifters made from 
tool steel.  They have several races on them and seem to be doing just fine.  

The ceramic lifters are likely to be the hardest faced lifters known to man.  
They are costly  and likely to last a lifetime -short of issues that can crack 
them. 

These ceramic lifters would be ideal on a dynamometer as cams could be changed 
without issues.
