I have am trying to follow this discussion and not having much
success. How does Mark Weather fit into the Southwick axle situation?
And what is the issue with the aluminum hubs exactly? Do we need
spacers for the TR3?
There are three separate subjects being discussed.
1. The Southwick REAR axle conversion. This is a stand-alone project.
This replaces the stock axle/hub design with a one piece forging
incorporating both axle and hub. The purpose of this project is to
eliminate rear axle breakage, which usually causes a car to roll
over. This conversion is done to a rear axle housing which you send
to Southwick and he converts the axle and returns it. The cost is
about $700. By the way, for our friends on other continents -- Bob
Southwick is willing to provide tooling and sell the purchased parts
to third parties, to eliminate shipping axle housings all over the world.
2. The aluminum FRONT hub project. Also a stand-alone project. This
is an aluminum hub which replaces the stock front hub. Its purpose is
to eliminate the necked-down portion of the front hub arrangement
that occasionally breaks. This project also replaces the inner
bearing with a larger, stronger one, and the project includes a new
lip seal arrangement to replace the stock felt and tin one.
Advantages - no breakage, bearings don't go out, heat conducted away
from bearing lube. Southwick makes these hubs. Cost about $450 per
pair including all bearings and small parts.
3. The front spindle conversion. This is a stand alone project,
almost. This provides front stub axles made of superior material by
superior manufacturing methods. It includes a spacer and shims that
get clamped between the inner and outer bearing, thus stiffening the
front spindle. The purpose is to eliminate the flex of the front
spindle, which causes the rotor to push the pads back during
cornering, giving unpredictable brake action. This kit is produced by
Mark Weathers and sold through Ken Gillanders (BFE). The cost is
about $250. The only relationship with the aluminum front hubs is
that since the aluminum hubs and stock hubs use different width
bearings, a different length spacer must be used.
Southwick's phone number is 309-949-2862.
Ken Gillanders (British Frame and Engine) phone number is 626-443-0939.
Weasel words -- I am not involved with the production or profit of
any of these. I did initiate them, but I am involved only as a
communication resource for the customers and the producers.
