ABSOLUTELY. Dual point distributors increase dwell without having either a
radical cam lobe or stiff point springs. The challenge is that points have
inertia so it's hard to get them to open and close quickly enough at high
RPM. With dual points the first set opens, but nothing happens because the
second set is still closed, then the second set opens and the spark happens
because the current is interrupted and the magnetic field in the coil
collapses. Then the first set closes and starts recharging the coil again.
Then the second set closes but nothing happens. You can see the benefit--you
don't need to have one set of points trying to close quickly enough after
opening--the first set manages that.

Subject: Mallory dual point dizzy
Hello:
While checking the point gap on my mallory dual point distributor, I
noticed
that one set of points opens before the other. Is this standard?
Thanks.
