The way I understand the long rod theory is several fold. One, the
piston is at or very near top dead center longer allowing the act of
combustion to build up more power for the push down on the piston which
creates the torque. Two, the most power exerted on the crank is when the rod
center line is 90 degrees or less to the crank journal as it is pushing in a
more downward condition that sideways (this can better be described with
tangents etc. but it has been too long since college for me) against the
crank and this occurs sooner in the rotation with the longer rods. And
third, you are moving less weight. All seem like they would add power/torque
to the engine. It would be better if one had the resources (money) to
experiment with different cam profiles and valve sizes, etc. but as I don't
have that excess cash flow, I will settle for the lighter weight gains and
try to adjust around the rest with valve clearances and cam timing. Barry
