I have not found anything more reliable than the Mallory Dual Point. It is
simple (remember KISS) and my dyno testing has shown it makes as much power as
an MSD box. I have gone thru 2 Pertronix units in my street TR4. One only
lasted 5 miles. Yes, I have have a 3 ohm coil like they require. I tried a
Crane Capacitive Discharge ignition in my race car and it resulted in my my
only DNF that year. I took it out and returned it to Jegs. I do not run an
alternator and MSD boxes not only draw more current, but are also more voltage
sensitive. A friend a few weekends ago fell back in his race due to a
mis-fire. His battery voltage dropped too low for the MSD to work properly.
With a dual point he probably would have lost a little power, but probably
would not have had the miss. I am sticking with the dual point for now. Joe(B)

I guess I wm just in awe at anyone would spend the big bucks for
obsolete technology like dual point distributors when there are other
less expensive and more reliable alternatives!

Subject: Non VTR help needed (distributor)
Well my Mallory dual point distributor finally arrived today after being
back ordered since February from more than one source. So I go to put
that
sucker in tonight and it has me totally confused. If I look at my stock
distributor when the rotor is pointing directly at the number one cap
terminal the points are closed and are in the center of the flat dwell
area
of the distributor cam. When I take my new distributor and place the
rotor
pointing directly at the number one cap terminal the points are fully
open
and on the lobe of the distributor cam. TOTALLY OPOSITE. I have looked
at
this for the last hour thinking that I am missing something and looking
at
it backwards but NO THATS REALY THE WAY IT IS. There is no adjustment.
So,
can somebody that knows more about this sort of thing than me explain
what
the heck is going on here?
Help me, I want to go autoxing Monday:-)
