Checking cam timing is easy in the car, it's altering it that gets more
difficult. All standard cams are symmetrical about TDC so set the rocker
gaps on 7 and 8 to say .060" (using the rule of nine), then turn the engine
to TDC (rotating it the normal way) and measure the gaps on 7 and 8 - they
should be the same because of the symmetry. An employees Triumph 2500
checked at work one day was about 25 degrees out - it wentt a lot better
when corrected.
