In the early 60s, I used to stand and look at the Vandegraff generator in
the basement of the science building at the University of Iowa. Not that I
knew what I was looking at.
How do you know all of this sh*t, Bill?

You need a sharp edge on
the electrode to get a spark easily--it's the opposite of the rounded domes
of Vandegraff electrostatic generators that spread their charge evenly and
don't spark until there is a huge charge.
