Just a few points (yeah thats intentional) regards ongoing discussion of
ignition systems...
a 4 cylinder engine will run reliably up to 8k with a conventional point
system, IF everything is in good order. Dual point or any other wazoo system
will
not produce more power UNLESS the multiple and/or hotter spark is compensating
for another problem such as incorrect mixture.
Dual point is no real advantage on a 4 cylinder unless you are using very
high rpm because it's a coil-saturation issue that causes weak spark. Dual
points
were originally built for 8 cylinder engines, where saturation time is
obviously a BIG issue.
The early Lucas distributors have a symmetrical cam lobe, later ones don't.
Asymmetrical cams have different dynamics which allows for more saturation time.
Later 45D units are real good because they have asymmetrical lobe & "big" cap
design, which was intended for HEI systems with more likelihood of "spark
scatter" inside the cap. There is greater distance between the contacts inside
the cap & there are "walls" between them as well.
I personally like the optical triggering units over points just simply due to
the fact that they pretty much eliminate maintenance.
