On August 2nd and 3rd, there will be SCCA double regional races at
Beaverun, which is NW of Pittsburgh. The Northern New Jersey SCCA's
Historic Series (formerly known as the Volvo Historic Series) will be
racing there as one of the race groups. This is the weekend before
the VTR National Convention at The Roadster Factory. I have discussed
this with the Series organizers and it is very likely for other racers
to participate in these races. 1973 and older SCCA cars and other
Vintage cars are eligible to compete, provided that they pass Tech
inspection (generally cars do not need to meet all of the current SCCA
rules). Cars are classed by displacement in 5 classes (up to 1300cc,
1301-1800cc, 1801 to 2500, 2501 to 3500 and over 3501), but all cars
must race on a DOT or Vintage tires. For SCCA licensed racers, all
you need to do is register in the appropriate (HS) class. For those
drivers without SCCA licenses, the SCCA does recognize, for vintage
competition, licenses from many Vintage race organizations including
CVAR, HSR, HMSA, SOVERN, SVRA, VARA, VARAC, VSCCA, VSCDA, VSCR, etc.
I am not sure, but you may need to show your latest medical
evaluation. The one catch is that to compete you will need to be an
SCCA member. I think that the individual membership runs about $60
per year (I just renewed the family membership, so I did not pay close
attention to the individual price).
So for those of you going to the VTR convention (or even if you are
not), think about coming out and racing at Beaverun. It is a good
opportunity to try out this new track and expand your trip to the
Pittsburgh area. Being a double race weekend, you can run either or
both days, so if you can't make it for both, you can maybe make it for
one day.
If you have any questions, I can try to answer them, and if I don't
have the answer, I can pass it on the the Historic Series organizers.
