isn't Park City hosting vintage motorcycle races
Yes, there was a long weekend of vintage motorcycle events in Park City the
summer of 1999. Some folks were hoping that would open the door for vintage
sports car racing as well, perhaps ending up with a street racing event like
the gone but not forgotten RMVR Steamboat event. Others, such as myself,
figured the "local" folks would not put up with it a second time.
In truth, it was that event that sort of got the ball rolling on the new
Bonneville International Raceway soon to be built here in Utah. One of the
folks instrumental in getting the motorcycle event in Park City was a member
of the Park City council at the time. After the event, he, along with another
bike enthusiast and a land owner from the area got together and the three of
them started planning to use some of this fellow's land for a race track in
Heber.
While eventually the Heber city council did approve their plans, the landowner
probably got cold feet from all the opposition to putting a race track in the
middle of a housing development area. He bailed, and the other two are the
principals behind the new track. And yes, if it does open for the 2002 season
I do plan on having some sort of FOT friendly event there. But for the 2001
season we are still stuck with the Wendover site. At the moment, I'm still
trying to decide about hosting an event at Wendover the weekend before VTR,
same time as the races at Mead. West coast folks could do Wendover on their
way to VTR, those east of the Rockies could hit Mead. Decisions, decisions.
