After adding the missing oil to the carbs and a good checkover of gas
lines, carb linkage, etc. I started the car and let it warm up to check
the timing. I heard a little ticking noise but didn't think much about
it at the time, hooked up the timing light, and checked where my white
line was. The line seemed to be moving around alot, must be that lucas
distributor. Rev the car up to check if the advance worked and the line
moved all over the place, both ways. I turned the switch off on the
timing light and set it down but noticed the light was still going off
ocasionally, in time with the ticking. So I move the #1 plug wire a
little and a one inch spark jumps from the cylinder head to the end of
the plug boot, Hmmm. Seems my $50 Paeco plug wires are a little too
good. So I drag out an old cap and wires, scare off the spiders and
dust off the cobwebs. The ends are so loose they hardly stay on the
plugs. On it goes. Restart the car. Timing is dead steady but way
advanced. After setting the distributor the car revs and sounds way
better. We'll see how it goes Sunday.
