It's supposed to help keep some of the engine bay heat down,
which it does seem to do, much like wrapping the headers but more
durable (and less prone to spontaneous combustion due to adsorbed
vapors and drips from the carbs). Also, if it does keep the heat
in, it is supposed to help the scavenging effect of the headers.
That's the advertising blurb anyway...
