If the idea is to jumper with a fuse, I don't think that would be effective.
If they are in parallel (the fuse and the ammeter), once the fuse blows, the
current will still go through the ammeter and it becomes the "fuse." Seems
like the fuse needs to be in series with the ammeter in order to protect it.

I haven't looked at a wiring diagram, which is probably different year to
year with respect to wiring colors, but how about putting a jumper between
the wire which goes into the ammeter to the wire which exits the ammeter?
Are these not accessible on your car? Both wires are accessible on early
cars like mine.
