hi oliver, well, you might want to remove the cam cover and see if the
cam and followers are nice and smoothe. you can see how much the upper
chain tens. shoe is sticking out of the tens.(less than 1/2 way is good).
ck. the fuel and water pumps, for leaks or seapage.
make sure 5th gear works. make sure the trans.
shifts to 2nd and 3rd without grinding( a slow, normal shift). it's
always possible to beat the synchros in a fast 1-2 shift.(that is, grind
the gear). oh yeah, the u-20 eng. is a lot stronger than your r-16,
and should pull well from about 3000-6000 rpm.
wiggle on the throttle shaft linkage to see how worn the carb.
bodys are.(im assuming it has 2 hitachi single carbs.)
remember, although the eng. has timing chains, you need to
change them about every 50-60 k miles. and, like a timing
belt eng., IF you dont know when the chains have been
done, you should plan on it, SOON. usually you can just do
both chains, and lower tens., leaving off the lower tens.
guide(which breaks a lot). unless the eng. has over 150k
miles, or is really gunked up inside, the gears dont have to
be changed as often as the chains. BTW, if you hear a rattle
that sounds like chain(upper tens.), try to pin point it
to top or bottom of eng.. if it's bottom of timing cover,
dont dismiss the car. if its the lower tens. guide, it
wont hurt the eng., until you fix it. the guide just lays
there on the bottom of the timing cover rattling against
the chain, slightly.(AND, thats why you leave it off the
block when you do chains). ive never heard a lower chain
tens. rattle, because there is lots of oil press.on it. the top
tens. is the last to get oil.(hence the two ck. balls in the tens.).
also, you might want to push(sideways) on the dist. shaft, to
ck. for distr. bushing wear.
sorry to go on and on, but there are some differences and weak
points to the u-20 eng.. i love the u-20 because the
bottom end(bearings) are so big and strong. ive run mine
unmercifilly over the years, but i have always done
periodic bearing cks. pulling the pan is easy.
well, best of luck, bob smith, ohio, 614 418 9911
