Robb,

My opinion:  Unless you are planning to add a lot of electrical load to the 
system (mondo stereo, for example) the original alternator works just fine, 
and reliably.  If it were mine, I'd fine a shop which can repair it, then 
run it.  In the 37 years I have owned my '66 (with a U20), I have never had 
anything but a stock alternator.  The only load I added is a 100 watt 
driving light.
