After the mini iron bottom last year, I limped my roadster stuck in 4th gear
all the way back to south OC. She sat there in the garage gathering dust
for a year waiting for me to pull the engine and swap transmissions. Two
nights ago I finally decided to crawl under the car to pop the shift dogs
back in. Just to drive her around again, if only in the 1st 3 gears. As I
was shifting the gears between 3rd and 4th and playing with the dogs, I
discovered that the 3rd gear syncro ring had more thrust play than the
others. This allowed the raised center portion (middle 3rd) of the dog to
slide past the shift ring. This allowed the dog to pop up a millimeter or
two which, along with the extra play in the syncro ring cause the dog to jam
up against the shift ring, locking the tranny in 4th. I figured if I
prevent the shift fork and ring from travelling too far over the 4th gear, I
can prevent the raised portion of the dog to slide past the ring and pop
out. The easy solution? I cut an aluminum spacer to snap onto the shift
rod between the 3-4 shift fork and the front of the transmission case. This
jams the shift fork before it completely slides over 4th gear. I drove it to
work yesterday and it does not pop out of 4th, nor does it get stuck in
gear. A quick work around that gets her back on the road! It looks like it
may work as permanent solution untill I have time to pull and rebuild the
