But, in order to drive it you need to pull the choke
at each gear change. Too lean??? Doesn't get that much
better when warmed up.

Darn few of the British SU parts will fit. They do have a good selection of
needles.
Check the dash pot oil. Most likely there is none there. The factory says
10w. ATF or Marvel Mystery Oil are popular.
