I think the smog mount would work just fine if it were shimmed up some, but
the critical piece is that front plate (like what Mike made)... standard on my
67 2000. I have seen conversions that had not used a support plate where the
alt had fatigued the long bolt enough to break it.

Tim,
Here's how I mounted a GM one-wire to my 1600 stroker using a smog bracket,
and a fabricated bracket made from a 1/8" x 1 1/2" steel bar with 3 holes
drilled in it. I had the same concerns as you and thought this was the
easiest solution to provide additional support on the front of the
alternator.

I used a long Grade 8 bolt going through the alternator and brackets. This
also required roughly a 1/2" worth of spacer / washers on the lower mounting
and a slight re-bending of the adjustment arm to make all the pulleys line
up.

works great and I have had no problems, yet. I say yet as I am not happy
with the stability of the mounting I did. I think it is a matter of time
before it fails on me.

bracket as it was there and seemed to work just fine. What I am looking for
is a bracket I have seen on ebay a couple times and not been able to win.
This bracket has a longer nose on it than the smog pump bracket. Does any
one know where I can get one of these? (Is this bracket the original
driver's side bracket moved to the other side of the motor? It didn't look
to me like it would fit properly so I didn't try it.)
