Hi Larry,
The whacko state of the fuel and temp. gauges is probably due to a faulty
voltage stabiliser.
Both gauges are fed a varying DC voltage from a little metal box mounted
near the steering column, under the dash.
These little suckers can be opened up and the contacts cleaned, but they are
also available new I believe.

Your high idle may be due to a mechanical problem causing the linkage and
butterflies to not return to "off".
Check the cable adjustment on both throttle and choke to make sure they are
not preventing the butterflies to close off.
Observe the butterflies as well to see if they are partially open or indeed
closed off at idle.
You may also want to check the ignition timing more closely to see if that
is set correctly.
Advanced timing will, I think, give you a high idle.
