Well I guess that I should introduce myself to the list. My name is Greg
Gill, I live in Puyallup which is about 35 miles south of Seattle, I have
been lurking on the list for awhile, since I got my first roadster. I would
like to thank all of you because I have found some fantastic information
here! However since purchasing my second roadster I have some questions that
I could use some help sorting out. I have two 1964 SPL 310's, one is a three
seater, and the other is a two seater. My first dilemma comes from the
vin's. As I understand it the three seater came out first, and then the two
seater, with the battery up front, started production in August of 64. Well
my two seater, vin #0997, and the two seater is vin #02101, how can this be
if the three seater came out first shouldn't it be a lower number than the
two seater.

My second question is regarding the engine numbers, I picked up a couple
vintage books that cover my roadster, and according to them the engine
number is on the side of the block. There is two tabs the first has a
letter, both of mine R, and the second is the number. The plate on the
firewall says G-84335, and G-79547 these don't match my engine. I have heard
that the number on the plate is a code, maybe, but shouldn't the letter on
the block be a G? I can't imagine that someone with two different cars put
in a 1600 engine, epically condescending that both cars are positive ground
and the motors would have to be made to work.

Lastly, I would like to find people, or a club in my area where I could
access informed people so I could gain some education on these cars, and
hopefully do some railing.

Greg - starting at the bottom first, there are some excellent clubs,
including ours in Colorado/Wyoming to tap into. Suggest you might try going
to
_www.311s.org_ (http://www.311s.org) to use as club resource.

next you have had all your cars motors switched out. The SPL all had 1500 G
series motors, R series is 1600.

Three seater vs. two seaters is kind of a vague area. I have 2 '63s and 1
64 all with three seat configuration. The year is the year is was STAMPED and
sold, not the year it was produced, VIN number is your first indicator.
They started production with 00076 (kept the first 00001 - 00075 and put them
on the street later. One of my 63's is actually stamped 64 but VIN is 00161,
which is earlier than the 00289 which is stamped '63 and has single carb.

If you want to find out more about the SPL 310's I kind of a collector
historical (or hysterical) buff on the 1500, so you can contact me off line.
