Subject: Laguna Seca Rematch
Going over the entries for next weekend's Monterey Historics and noticed
that John Morton has been paired with an old buddy in one of the race
groups: Herb Wetanson (better known as the driver of the Wetson Alfa
that battled with John and BRE for the 2.5 Trans Am title).
Unfortunately, they won't be driving 2.5 cars -- John's in a Lotus 23
and Wetanson has a Cooper-Monaco for the 3B race group on Sunday.
Morton's also entered in a Lang Cooper in the same race (!) and a Tiger
later that day.
Another development for the Historics is that Toyota has taken over from
Chrysler as the official sponsor, which is an interesting development
for an event that's done virtually nothing to recognize the Japanese
role in vintage motorsports (the two BRE 510's in '01 may be the only
Japanese cars to "officially" participate in 33 years). Seems likely
that may change with Toyota's influence, but whether or not it would
include Nissans may be another matter. Too bad they didn't play a bigger
role in the Trans Am days! They will have a recent F1 car doing demos,
so that should be entertaining.
This really is an exceptional weekend for car fans in Monterey. The ZONC
folks are hosting their corral on Saturday and welcome anybody from
within the Nissan/Datsun family. With John driving on Sunday, he should
have some free time to hang around, and Brock is expected as well. Maybe
John Knepp, maybe Wetanson.
