Ok guys and gals, I just got done messing with it. Confirmed that the EI
internal wires appear to be in perfect condition. Unable to tell anything
about what they are attached to on the inside (a ring) but I assume it is a
magnet of some kind. This could be changed out if I can find one in a
wrecking yard, but I do not suspect it is the culprit. Cleaned all the
connections and have changed the ignition module before with no effect.
Changed plugs, regapped to stock for an EI. Checked resistance on a few of
the plug wires again, have done all before (very very low). Ran the engine at
2000 rpms without the Jacobs. Missing bad. Pulled off plug wires one at a
time... each one caused it to run about the same (i.e. no one wire was clearly
the issue, it would run like one would expect on three cylinders plus with an
added stumble) indicating the problem is in all 4, suggesting an issue
upstream. I was unable to get my timing light to work... not sure if it was a
bad connection at the battery (I have to use jumper cables to reach the batt
in the trunk and I have no other available batt at the moment) or if the light
is bad now. Will test it on a neighbor's car (all my other cars are coil
packs). Also, the cap is nearly new, and the rotor appears perfectly fine,
though that too would be easy to replace. All other wires have been replaced
(wires to the coil, wires to the ignition module, to the ignition switch, to
the fuse box etc.) and I believe are good. However, they are of course tied
into the existing harness.
This is what I want to do and would appreciate any help or suggestions: I
want to create a separate wiring system to isolate the entire ignition system
from the rest of the car's electrical system. It could have it's own fuse
box, switch, whatever it takes. At this point I need to be able to wire in
the coil, ignition module and whatever else it would take to tell the engine
to spark. It could be set up as just a test system usng a completely separate
power source (another battery) and grounded elsewhere (?) Is this possible?
Calling all gurus...Thanks!
