Concerning the speedo question, the screech and pegging of
the needle helped to point to a potentially bad speedo.
If you can, reach behind the dash and unscrew the cable from
the head. Then unscrew the cable from the distributor pedestal,
and try turning the cable by hand. If it feels like it's snagging or
catching at all, then you probably have a dry or frayed cable...
But it could be the tach :-)
