Hi Brian,
not knowing what type the alternator is makes it a little hard.
However I have some excellent charging circuit diagrams so I'll try to help.
Th W (White) wire which is large in gauge, is the principal charging lead,
usually connected to the B (Battery) terminal at the alternator.
It then goes to the positive battery post (for negative earth systems) via a
fuseable link.
The B (Black) wire is generally grounded at a good ground and connects to
the E (Earth) terminal of the alternator.
Then you may have another two pin plug with say a W (White) wire and a WR
(White with Red stripe).
The small gauge White wire is connected to the S (Sense) terminal on the
alternator.
This is the bloke that should have battery voltage on it when the key is on,
to the feed the alternator field with current.
No voltage here means no field excitement thus no charging current.
The WR wire is connected to the L (Lamp) terminal, this is the ALT/CHARGE
lamp on the dash if used.
For an EXTERNAL regulator you will a have few more wires exiting the
alternator.
If you only have what I described above, or less, the alternator you are
using has an INTERNAL regulator.
Thus an external regulator is NOT required.
You can use the wiring as connection points if necessary but the actual
external regulator is superfluous.
The ammeter should be in the main charge lead between the battery and the
alternator.
Thus, with everything else working OK, it will show a - or DISCHARGE when
the key is turned on and during cranking, then swap to a + or CHARGE
indication as soon as the engine fires up.
There must be a separate huge gauge battery feed to the starter motor
solenoid which the ammeter does not read.
I hope this helps you to trouble shoot the problem.

I have a 69 2000 with charging problems everything else is working but the
ampmeter never shows a charge but does show a discharge when lights or
others are used,,using this list and other resources I am trying to
troubleshoot things myself for personal knowledge and save a couple of $$.
My question is is on the back of the alternator at the pigtail should I see
some voltage at the white and black wire with the key on.
I have voltage on the white wire all the time but not on the field wire at
alternator or voltage regulator
