As Brian mentioned the flat side of the lash pad goes down. A friend used to
have a first generation 810 that had an L-series 6 similar to that in the
Z-car and started having a problem like you describe. Turned out that the
valves were sticking, due to worn guides I think, and the lash pads would
pop out when the valve(s) stuck and the cam lobe rotated past the pad.

Not sure how you can tell if that's your problem short of tearing the engine
down and seeing how much side play there is between the valve stems and
guides.
