If one breaks the outer bearing race in a vise and then cuts the sheet
metal ball retainer/separator and removes it, it is then possible to remove
the backing plate over the inner race and pressed on collar. Now the
backing plate is out of the way so that you can have easy access to the
collar. The collar should be attacked with a cold chisel and large hammer
so that it stretches and releases from the axle. Be careful not to damage
the seal surface on the axle. The inner bearing race is usually easy to
press or tap off. Removal of the collar and bearing race can be left to a
machine shop if you take it there to install the new bearing and collar.
It is best to remove the backing plate before going to the machine shop so
that it can be cleaned and painted. Make sure they know which side of the
backing plate goes outward. Don't ask why the last comment was made. -;)
