Recovering from head bolt disaster on father's day.....
Fired up the decarboned head with new gaskets and bolts. Only had one
incident, the gasket at the top of the thermostat neck was leaking badly so
off came the gasket and a little red silicone sealant and the leak was
cured. The pinging on hills I was having is now totally gone and the engine
feels better than ever!!!
Some interesting observations-
1. when I carried the head into my workshop and it on the bench a set screw
with a tapered end fell onto the bench. It was out of the rocker shaft tower
at the rear of the head. Obviously it was just sitting in the hole and came
out at the easiest moment.
I would recommend checking this setscrew whenever the valve cover is off. If
it were not for other problems it would still be doing nothing it was
supposed to. ( It locks the rocker shaft in place.)
2. After sitting a couple days without the head in humid weather, the top of
the block developed some light rust which when scraped off brought some
other stuff off which I had not gotten before. The carbon on the pistons
began to flake and came right off.
I think getting this carbon out is what is making the engine run so well.
and maybe finally getting the valves adjusted....).
I let my engine run alittle rich which probably speeds up the carbon
process. Has anyone had any success with spraying a fine mist of water in
the carbs at high idle to clean the carbon out?
OT---got some pictures from Matt in Bagdad, he seems to be eating well and
found time for plenty of smiles. One picture was of him standing next to a
private goverment resort lake with a stringer of fish. genetic tests on my
wife came back negative for colon cancer so she will not have to have the
whole thing removed, just a couple giant polyps.... some weeks go better
than others..
why is it that my 1970 roadster and '77 BMW cycle both start as soon and the
engine turns over and the 1990s cars need to crank a few times...
