Valves don't knock, they tappety tap.
A soft knock that isn't too 'bassy' usually indicates a bad connecting rod
bearing. A louder knock usually indicates a crank bearing. Bring it to a
mechanic and let him listen, or a knowledgeable friend.
Whatever bearing it is, doesn't sound good.
