I have taken this week to play (work) on my little datsun. After
getting it on the road with rebuilt slave cylinders on the rear brakes
and clutch I was disappointed to find that all three are leaking.
I ordered a new set of brake slaves from Ross and ordered a new clutch
slave from a local parts house. I also decided this was a good time to
install new flexible brake hoses and not so flexible metal hoses to the
rear brakes.
Searching for the flex hoses I went to eBay and found a new pair for the
L520/521 pickups. After a few questions to the seller and no response
from the list about compatibility I decided to take a chance. They
looked right, the seller told me they were the correct length, and the
trucks went back to 66. These are EXACTLY the same as the roadsters
use, AND you can purchase them over the local parts counter (Bendix part
# 77002, which is about an inch shorter). I purchased one locally and
installed all three today. I also finished installing the metal rear
brake lines.
That leaves the clutch cylinder leaking. It is NOT leaking from the
open end of the cylinder. After changing the brake lines and examining
what is mounted to the clutch, I think it is missing the copper washer
that belongs between the brake hose and the cylinder body. If I am
right I will put a new washer in and the new slave cylinder will be
added to my spare parts shelf.
Tomorrow I pick up the new rear brake shoes to finish the brake job.
Then I will take apart my spare set of SU carbs and make sure there are
no cracks or other leaks in the assembly. If I am satisfied with my
findings I am going to replace the entire assembly to see if that stops
the problem I am having with the front carb not drawing air as it
should.
With a little luck I should have the car back on the ground in a day or
so and it will not only stop, it will run better than it does now, which
is surprisingly good even with the carburation problems..
