Ken,

I have used the block of wood for years, and if your car is in the air I would
recommend using a 2x4.  If the car is sitting on the ground, then the
suggestions to just put it in gear and either set the hand brake or block the
tires are very good.

If you use the wood, make sure you clean out any residue after you remove it.  I
recently removed the damper on my U20 mounted on an engine stand.  I used a 2x4
very successfully.  The 4" width works very well.  I try to make sure I hit the
crank and not the rod whenever I block the crank this way.
