My method has served me well is:
After cleaning the engine very well, I take my engine color  and spray it
onto a piece of un-waxed cardboard or a paper plate. Using a few foam
brushes to apply the paint to the engine from the plate. I say "a few foam
brushes" because they melt as you use them.

No masking, No overspray, No muss, No fuss
